Well, I’m almost proud to see France is doing good with festivals. As far as I know, no, we don’t have any “quota”.
Wow, it’s sobering really. I realize that the music industry has been predominantly male based since it’s inception, but you’d think that over the decades women would have gained a bit more footing. As a female in the music production/DJ world, it definitely feels like a fight, and it feels like there is generally a lot of blatant disregard for my work. I have definitely battled with self confidence issues over the years due to this reality as I’m sure a lot of females in the arts do. As an independent label owner in the US, I have done my best to represent and expose prominent female talent through the release of compilation CDs called “Digital Bliss” Volume’s 1 and 2 – but of course, releasing music these days is seriously an uphill battle unless you have a good budget for marketing. Anyway, much respect to my tenacious ladies who keep honoring and raising their own unique voices !! Go go go!!!
Post updated with infos from Mo about TodaysArt NL. I have enhanced all the numbers for better visibility..

[…] We have looked into statistics regarding festival line-ups, record label releases and the appearance of women in several top 100 lists. The results are shocking and disheartening, even for us deeply involved in the scene. Most festivals – whether financed through public funds or not – clearly do not place any value on ensuring an appropriate ratio of female artists, or diversity in general. This also evidently applies to label releases – in Germany (an epicentre of electronic music and female artists) as much as in many other countries. Nowadays, a 10% proportion of female artists can be considered above average. We feel it is unacceptable in the 21st century that we can still end up being the only woman performing at a large festival. We find our female colleagues inspiring and feel that audiences would also like to hear them and see them perform. Please find the results of our research so far here: femalepressure.wordpress.com/facts […]
I already notice that, everywhere i play music i see how male musicians have much more space, i came from Italy and this country even is not mention wOW!!! i share my strenght!

not sayin’ this is not an issue, please don’t get me wrong – but need to correct the count on springfestival to prevent them from being the jackass, as with feelipa and etepetete, there are at least a few female representatives (of which i would still love to see more on the lineup as well).
hi jazzoo, thanks for pointing this out! indeed – the count was too early and needed to be updated. now, springfestival has 74 acts / speakers on their program website: 1 female, 1 mixed, 1 transvestite, and 1 artist – doze – who i could not identify.
thanks for setting this straight :) still not quite correct though, as both feelipa and the etepetete collective are plain females afaik – not sure though who the mixed and transvestite refer to, maybe one of the female artists’s counts went into there by accident. doze are two boys btw and though they do great music, i’m afraid they won’t force up the count :(
big up anyway for setting this study up – independently if there’s a average of zero or two female acts in a festival lineup, it’s obvious there’s a slight gender gap to put it in neat terms.
don’t see feelipa on http://www.springfestival.at/lineup.
and thanks for enlightening me on etepetete. i found another crew called etepetete too, but this one is probably the one playing at springfestival since they live in vienna and graz: https://www.facebook.com/etepetetegirls
so, now we have 2 female acts, 1 mixed (hvob), 1 trans/vestite (mykki blanco)
hmm not sure why she isn’t billed on the website lineup but she’ll definitely be playing – confusingly, she’s announced on another part of the site (http://www.springfestival.at/blog/springfestival-announces-first-names) and on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/363519303701963
